TIME FOR REFLECTION
Elizabeth Halstead studying a painting she is working on.

Born in Yorkshire, Elizabeth has been painting ever since she can remember. However it was not till she moved to British Columbia, some thirty five years ago, that she began to paint seriously. "Canada is so dramatic," she says, "I defy anyone not to wish to capture the inspiration it affords."

In her early days, seeking outlets for her work, Elizabeth offered a few her paintings to a local gallery and was pleasantly surprised when they took the lot and asked for more. Since then success has followed success with many exhibitions both in Canada and the United States and commissioned work becoming increasingly in demand.

It was when she returned to her native country , via a stay in Ireland, around fifteen years ago, that Elizabeth discovered a new dimension to her work. Deprived of the startling landscapes of Canada, or the hills of Wicklow to inspire her she turned her concentration to the wildlife that surrounded her at her new home in the Cotswolds. Birds, rabbits, badgers and foxes all featured in her work, and then, she discovered deer ! The elusive roe of her then native woodland, the peat stained stags of her present home in Scotland, the quizzical stare of the fallow and the secretive wanderings of the muntjc and latterly the eerie whistle of the Sika when it appears at dusk in her home woodlands.

Today, Elizabeth stalks the hills and woodlands all over the country armed with sketch book and camera to capture the subjects of her passion and to immortalise them as individuals on canvas. Working mainly in oils on board she enjoys the uncanny talent of combining atmosphere with accuracy. Her painting draw you into them. You expect the roe buck to mysteriously vanish from sight, the stag to roar in defiance or to feel the damp swirling mist on your face. Deservedly the sincerity of her painting has earned her an enviable reputation and created a high demand for her work. Although Elizabeth says she will always paint for pleasure, her time these days is very much taken up with commissions.

Elizabeth's work is much sought after and will often be seen on magazine covers and Christmas cards for organisations like the British Deer Society. She exhibits regularly at the major game fairs around the country and now offers signed Limited Edition fine art prints of many of her paintings, a selection of which are featured on this site.
